Story views: what they are for and when to use them

It is one of the least understood services. Stories are a relationship format, not a discovery one — and that changes the effect of boosting the number.

What story views do

They shift perception. A story with 40 views and one with 3,000 communicate different audience sizes. Since the number is visible to you and to partners, it influences the perceived relevance of the profile.

What they do not do

They do not widen the reach of your next stories. The order your stories appear in depends on real closeness: who replies, reacts and messages. Views alone do not build closeness.

Stories are measured by closeness, not volume. Someone who replies is worth more than someone who only watches.

When it makes sense

• A profile presenting numbers to a brand or partner.
• A new profile whose first stories look empty.
• A launch sequence where perceived audience matters.

When it does not

• If the goal is to increase sales through stories.
• If you want to rise in the queue for existing followers.
• On every story, every day.

What actually improves stories

1. A poll or question box in every sequence.
2. Replying to every response in DMs.
3. Short sequences, three to five screens.
4. The most important content in the day's first story.

Those four actions move the display queue consistently.

Proportion

Story views far above the follower count are obvious. Keep a plausible ratio — generally a fraction of your followers.
