Reels: how to make a video that reaches more people

Reels is the format Instagram delivers most to people who do not follow you yet. That makes it the main entry door for new followers — and that is why it pays to understand what separates a video that reaches from one that dies at two hundred views.
The first three seconds decide
The platform measures how many people keep watching after the start. If many scroll away early, it stops delivering. No trick makes up for a weak opening.
Start at the most interesting point. If the video is about a result, show the result first. If it is about a mistake, name the mistake in the first sentence. Introductions, "hey everyone" and explaining what you are about to say are the three biggest retention killers.
Put the hook on screen
Many people watch without sound. If your first sentence only exists in the audio, it does not exist for half the audience. Put one large line of text in the first seconds saying what this is about.
Cutting rhythm
Cut everything that adds nothing: pauses, breathing, filler words, repeated ideas. A well-cut 40-second video holds better than a dragging 25-second one.
A practical reference: if you watch your own video and feel like skipping ahead somewhere, that is exactly where the audience leaves.
Length
For growth, the 15 to 45 second range usually performs best. Very short videos have little time to convince someone to follow; very long ones lose retention. Long videos work when the subject truly demands it, not by default.
The ending mistake
Ending with "like and share" wastes the one moment when the viewer is deciding what to do. Replace it with something that gives a reason to follow: a summary of what they will find on the profile, or a promise of the next video.
Audio
Using trending audio helps distribution, but it does not save bad content. If the audio has nothing to do with what you show, it hurts more than it helps.
Caption and first comment
The caption serves two purposes: giving context and prompting replies. A specific question at the end of the caption earns more comments than any generic request.
When reach does not come
If ten videos in a row underperform, the problem is rarely the algorithm. Check in this order: opening, length, image quality, an overly repeated subject and irregular frequency.
Summary
Direct opening, written hook, tight cuts, 15 to 45 seconds and an ending that gives a reason to follow. The rest is repetition until you find the format your audience responds to.
