A post's first hour: why it decides your reach

A post's first hour: why it decides your reach

Platforms test every new post with a small group before deciding whether to widen it. The result of that test defines almost all of the final reach.

How the test works

  1. The post is shown to a sample of your closest audience.
  2. The system measures likes, comments, saves, shares and screen time.
  3. If the numbers beat what is expected for your profile, it goes to a bigger group.
  4. The cycle repeats while performance holds.

That is why two posts on the same profile can have completely different reach.

What to do before posting

  • Post when your audience is online — the initial sample needs to be active.
  • Have the caption and call ready, with no edits after publishing.
  • Be available for the following hour.

What to do in the first hour

  1. Reply to every comment with a sentence.
  2. Share it to stories with a different call than the caption.
  3. Send it to people with direct interest in the topic.
  4. Do not edit the post during this period.
Replying to a comment counts as new interaction. An hour of active replies is worth more than any later adjustment.

What kills the effect

  • Posting and leaving.
  • Posting overnight, when the audience is away.
  • Two posts back to back with little gap — they compete with each other.

And if the post did not take off?

Do not delete it. Deleting returns nothing and loses the history. Posts that do not take off keep receiving visits over time, especially when the topic is searched again.

Summary

Post at your audience's time, be present for the following hour and reply to everything. Early performance is the variable you can most directly influence.
