How to use stories to hold attention in your posts

How to use stories to hold attention in your posts

A story is the format the brain processes with the least effort and remembers longest. That is why the same information performs far better when narrated.

The four-part structure

  1. Situation: where you or the character was.
  2. Problem: what went wrong or stalled.
  3. Turn: what changed.
  4. Result and lesson: what happened and what remains.

It works in 30 seconds of video, eight carousel slides or five caption lines.

Start at the tensest moment

Instead of starting at the chronological beginning, start at the point of highest tension and circle back to explain. "I lost my biggest client because of one message" holds more than "two years ago I started...".

Chronological order is the least interesting of the possible orders.

Use a character

You, a client or someone from the audience. A character creates identification; an abstract concept does not. "A client of mine had 200 followers" works better than "small profiles usually...".

Concrete details

Numbers, place names, timing. "Three weeks later, he closed 12 orders" is more believable and memorable than "soon after he had good results".

One lesson, not five

A story with many conclusions dilutes. Pick the main point and end on it.

Where to use it

  • Introducing who you are.
  • A client case.
  • Explaining why you work the way you do.
  • A mistake that taught you something.
  • Opening an offer.

A caution

A story has to be true. Invented narratives get noticed over time and cost the trust built — which is exactly what the story was supposed to create.

Summary

Situation, problem, turn and lesson. Start at the tension, use a character, give concrete details and close on a single conclusion. Stories hold the most attention for the least production effort.
