How to record good video using only your phone

A modern phone records better than many cameras from ten years ago. What separates an amateur video from a professional one is almost never the camera.

Order of importance

1. Sound
2. Light
3. Stability
4. Framing
5. Camera

A video with good image and bad sound gets abandoned. A video with simple image and clean sound gets watched to the end.

Sound

• Record in a small room with fabric, a sofa or curtains — hard surfaces create echo.
• Stay close to the microphone. Distance is the main enemy.
• Turn off fans and air conditioning while recording.
• A cheap lavalier microphone already solves most of it.

Light

The best source is free: a window. Face it, never turn your back to it — light behind you turns you into a silhouette. At night, a lamp pointed at a white wall creates soft, even light.

Light coming from the front and slightly above the face solves 90% of image problems.

Stability

Rest the phone on anything. A cheap tripod works, but so does a stack of books. Shaky video is tiring and reduces retention.

Framing

Vertical for social media. Eyes in the upper part of the frame, not the centre. Simple background: a plain wall beats a cluttered room.

Recording settings

1080p at 30 frames per second is enough and produces light files. 4K is rarely necessary and eats storage. Lock focus and exposure by tapping the screen to avoid flickering.

Captions

Many watch without sound. Burned-in captions raise retention consistently. The apps themselves generate automatic captions — review them before publishing.
