How the Instagram algorithm works in practice

There is no single algorithm. Feed, Reels, Explore and Stories use different criteria, which is why the same profile performs unevenly across them.
The common principle
They all try to predict the same thing: the probability that you will interact with that content. The higher the prediction, the higher it appears.
Feed
Prioritises accounts you already interact with. The strongest signals:
- Interaction history with that profile.
- Time spent on the post.
- Likelihood of commenting or saving.
- How recent the post is.
Reels
The most open to non-followers. Here what counts is the video's own performance:
- Retention and replays.
- Shares — the strongest signal.
- Saves.
- Comments.
In the Feed you compete for the attention of people who already follow you. In Reels you compete for everyone's attention.
Explore
Based on similarity: it shows content resembling what the person already consumed. That is why clearly themed content reaches Explore more than generic content.
Stories
Ordered by closeness: whoever interacts most with you appears first. Replying to messages and polls increases that closeness.
What does not influence it
- Deleting and reposting does not "reset" anything.
- There is no penalty for using links.
- Hashtags alone do not determine reach.
- There is no shadow penalty for posting a lot.
What you can actually do
- Produce content that earns shares and saves.
- Keep a recognisable theme.
- Reply quickly in the first hours.
- Post when your audience is online.
- Prioritise short video to reach non-followers.
Summary
The algorithm predicts interaction. Shares, saves and retention are the signals it values most. Working on those three is the only consistent way to increase reach.
