How to write titles and hooks that make people stop

How to write titles and hooks that make people stop

The best content in the world goes unseen if the opening does not hold. Titles and hooks are the part of the work with the highest return per minute invested.

What makes someone stop

Three triggers, in order of strength:

  1. Curiosity: an information gap that itches.
  2. Usefulness: the promise of solving something now.
  3. Identification: "this is about me".

Formulas that work

  • Mistake: "The mistake that makes [audience] lose [result]".
  • Number: "3 ways to [result] without [obstacle]".
  • Contradiction: "Doing more [common action] may be hurting you".
  • Direct question: "Why doesn't your [thing] [result]?".
  • Before and after: "From [bad situation] to [good situation] in [time]".
  • Industry secret: "What nobody in the field tells you about [subject]".
  • If I started over: "If I started today, I'd do this first".

Writing rules

  • Be specific: "in 7 days" beats "fast".
  • Talk about the audience, not yourself.
  • One idea per title.
  • Simple words.
A vague title is not read even by interested people. Specificity is what makes them stop.

The video hook

In the first three seconds, the video needs movement and a line that creates expectation. Avoid introductions, greetings and branded intros — all of it is time in which the viewer is deciding to leave.

Never promise what you do not deliver

An exaggerated title earns the click and destroys retention. Since retention decides distribution, the net effect is negative.

Test

Write five titles per piece and choose the most specific. Over time, note which formulas perform best on your profile — they vary by niche.

Summary

Use curiosity, usefulness and identification; be specific; talk about the audience; and never promise beyond the content. Five minutes writing titles pays more than an hour editing.
